Protectors of The Holy City and the Most Holy — and the Church’s inquisitors, empowered since the Third Crusade to root out the Arts of the Corrupted anywhere.

History

  • Watched over the Colleges from their founding, lest the Arts of the Corrupted take root.
  • After the Great Betrayal (Third Crusade), granted sweeping authority over even the most powerful rulers.
  • Their overreach created Hazad’s independence: their false accusation against Hazad’s crown prince triggered the Fourth Crusade and the East-West schism. They have been cast out of Hazad for ~40 years.
  • Confiscated many books from Al-Hakim University, likely now in the Holy City. (S3)

In the Campaign

What the GM Timeline Adds (all GM)

  • Summer 1731: the Order supplied several Phoenix Knights to Matthias Melnich, Prince of Strelitz, for a private witchcraft prosecution carried across a border into Vyones. Madeline Foussard took charge of the case and declined to execute.
  • Madeline was tutor to Marie-Celeste de la Courcel, the designated heir to Averoigne — a knight-confessor placed inside a royal household before that household became the centre of a succession war. She was appointed in anticipation of the legitimization (GM, S6), i.e. before Marie-Celeste was an heir at all. Marie-Celeste had been raised in a monastery until then.

Speculation

The Order had advance knowledge of Etienne’s deathbed intentions. You cannot appoint a tutor “in anticipation” of a legitimization you have not been told about. Two weeks after the designation, the heir and the Owl’s commander were murdered in the royal castle. That does not make the Phoenix the assassins — but it puts them on the very short list of people who knew early. See The Night in the Royal Castle.

What S6 Adds

Speculation

Forty years of divination. If the Order has had reliable divination since the Fourth Crusade, then everything the party has assumed about how the Phoenix finds things needs revising — including how Gandolfini knew where to land in Hazad, and how anyone located three sanctums. And if Estelle is theirs, the Order is currently running a knowledge-exchange operation into the dreams of a Hazadi noble while formally banned from the country.

Against it, hard: Estelle preaches the Six Voices to strangers, and the Phoenix executed an entire order for less proximity to this material than she hands out in a night.

Known Members

Speculation

The Owl’s executioners are also the Owl’s archive. Every fact the party has about the sanctums comes from documents the Phoenix produced while destroying the men who found them. That is not a neutral source; it is a prosecution file. The party has been reading it as a report.

Speculation

The Order keeps turning up in this campaign one step behind something: a knight-confessor imprisoned seven years at the Folly, another killed at a smuggler’s drop-off, four more dead in a witchcraft escape. If the Phoenix is hunting the same thread the party is, they are losing people to it at a rate that should worry everyone.
